5 Outing Ideas for Seniors with Dementia

If your loved one has dementia, it may be more difficult for them to take part in the activities they used to enjoy. However, there are still many ways for people with dementia to enjoy their time and bond with loved ones.

One of the best ways to spend quality time with your loved one is to get outside and enjoy the world around you in a stress-free way.

Benefits of Getting Out and About for People with Dementia

Dementia can create many unpleasant symptoms, such as confusion, forgetfulness, and mood swings. Depending on the advancement of your loved one’s condition, they may not be able to live alone safely any longer.

When your family member spends more time doing activities that are relaxing and enjoyable with people they trust, it can ease their symptoms and greatly improve their quality of life. Additionally, keeping them mentally and socially stimulated will help to slow the progression of their condition.

5 Easy and Fun Outings for Seniors with Dementia

Looking for a fun and simple way to get your family member with dementia out of the house? Here are a few inexpensive or free options that both you and your loved one can enjoy.

1. Have a Picnic in the Park

Getting outside is a simple yet effective way for people of all ages and lifestyles to boost their moods and get active. If you live in a warm climate, try bringing a picnic lunch to your local park to enjoy the nice weather, a tasty meal, and some casual conversation.

The warm sunlight and scenic natural views will help your loved one feel calm and relaxed. You may be able to spot some wildlife during your visit. If your family member is feeling up to it, you could even take a short walk around the park to get some easy physical activity in.

2. Watch Dogs Play at the Dog Park

If your family member with dementia is a dog lover but isn’t able to have a pet of their own, visiting the dog park is a free way for them to immerse themselves in a fun, joyful atmosphere full of lots of dogs at play.

Make sure you find a shady place to sit, especially if you visit the dog park on a spring or summer day. Depending on your family member’s condition, the two of you can be as involved as you’d like to be with the dogs, whether that means encouraging friendly pups to greet you or keeping your distance and just enjoying the fun.

3. Visit a Farmer’s Market or Flea Market

Crowded indoor destinations like shopping malls can sometimes be stressful for people with dementia, especially on a busy day. However, perusing a shopping area can be an enjoyable way for those with dementia to immerse themselves in a new experience and stimulate their mind with all kinds of objects to explore.

Farmer’s markets and flea markets have open-air layouts, which means your loved one is less likely to feel closed in and anxious when visiting a destination like this. Try to take them at a less populated time so that they can take a look at all the items for sale at their own pace without feeling rushed.

4. Go to the Beach

Sitting beside large bodies of water can be calming, and finding a sense of calm can be very comforting for those struggling with dementia. If you live within driving distance of the ocean or a lake, try taking your family member to sit by the beach and simply enjoy the peaceful feelings this activity can bring.

If you’d like to encourage some healthy movement, you can take a walk along the beach and soak up some sunshine. Physical activity can help improve brain function and stabilize mood.

5. Visit Your Local Zoo

Depending on your family member’s mobility, a trip to the zoo might be just the fun-filled day they need. This is the perfect place to stimulate their mind and engage their senses by viewing all kinds of different animals and learning fun facts about the various species.

The atmosphere of the zoo will be very different from the atmosphere in their home, allowing them to take a break from their day-to-day routine. Also, the zoo has plenty of benches and covered sitting areas to take advantage of when you need a break from walking around the grounds.

Enjoy Quality Time with Your Family Member with Dementia

Finding activities outside the house for your loved one who has dementia is important because it supports their health and well-being. But it’s also beneficial for you to spend quality time with them and make memories together. With these simple activities, you can do both at once, and you can each enjoy the benefits.
