Your family member is one-of-a-kind, so you need a caregiver who truly understands and values them. Our companion caregivers provide non-medical support that brings warmth, connection, and joy into your loved one’s home.

With friendly chats, engaging activities, and meaningful companionship, we keep your loved one mentally stimulated, easing feelings of isolation to help them thrive at home.

What Our Companion Caregivers
Help With Day to Day

In-home companion care follows your loved one’s own routine. One visit might be a walk, lunch together, and a ride to the pharmacy. Over a few weeks, the caregiver learns how they take their coffee.

  • Walks, games, and favorite pastimes together
  • Nourishing meals and company at the table
  • Friendly reminders to stay on track with medications
  • Light housekeeping such as laundry, dishes, and tidying
  • Errands and rides to appointments, the grocery store, or social events
  • Check-ins on how the day is going, with updates for your family
  • Are military veterans
  • Are living with Alzheimer’s disease or other memory-related conditions
  • Are recovering at home after surgery or hospitalization
  • Need continuous care and close supervision

What Families Are Saying
About Our Companion Care

Is Companion Care Enough for Your Loved One?

Not sure which type of care your loved one needs? A few everyday signs show whether companion care or personal care is the better fit.

Companion care may be the right choice if your loved one:

  • Lives alone and feels isolated or lonely
  • Is mentally sharp but enjoys social interaction
  • Could benefit from light help around the house
  • Needs transportation to appointments or social outings
  • Would enjoy having a friendly, familiar presence in their day

Personal care may be the better fit if your loved one:

  • Needs help with bathing, dressing, or grooming
  • Has trouble managing incontinence or toileting
  • Struggles with mobility or transferring safely
  • Is recovering from surgery or illness
  • Requires hands-on support with daily hygiene routines

Many families start with companionship and add help as needs change. When bathing, dressing, or mobility help is needed, your Care Manager can add personal care to the plan.

Questions Families
Ask Us About Companion Care

Companion care pairs an older adult at home with a caregiver for company and light daily help. It is non-medical, so the focus is conversation, meals, errands, and keeping the day pleasant. Family Matters has been a family-run home care agency in California since 2002.

Companion care covers the social and practical side of the day, not hands-on personal care. A companion caregiver cooks, tidies, drives, runs errands, offers medication reminders, and keeps your loved one company. Bathing, dressing, toileting, and help transferring fall under personal care, which Family Matters also provides. Caregivers offer medication reminders only and never administer medication.

Companion care is billed by the hour. The rate depends on your loved one’s schedule and the kind of help they need. The most accurate way to get a number is a free consultation, where we walk through the options together.

Not usually. Medicare covers medically necessary care and does not pay for non-medical help such as companionship. Most families pay privately. If your loved one has a long-term care policy, we will help with the claims process. Veterans and their spouses may also qualify for help through VA benefits.

Start with how your parent spends a typical day and where the gaps are. Then ask how an agency screens caregivers, how it matches them, and who you call when something changes. Family Matters caregivers are employees rather than contractors, each one background checked, bonded, and insured.

Often within a few days, sometimes faster after a hospital discharge. After the consultation, your Care Manager completes the care plan and matches a caregiver to the schedule. Call us and we will tell you plainly what is possible for your situation.
